What is aLittle Free Library?

A Little Library is a simple concept: ‘take a book, share a book.’ These small, weatherproof boxes are typically installed outside homes or near community spaces, allowing anyone to borrow or contribute books freely. They act as mini community hubs - places where neighbours connect through reading.

In 2009 Todd Boll, a man from Winconsin, USA decided to create something special as a legacy for his much loved mother, a teacher who had always loved reading. So, he built a small, waterproof home with a couple of shelves full of books and erected it at the end of his drive, inviting passersby to borrow at will.  It was such a success the idea grew and spread and now there are over 200,000 book-sharing boxes worldwide and an app to help you locate your nearest one.

Here's how to build and run your own:

Step 1:Choose the Right Location

Location is everything. Pick a spot that is:

  • Visible and easy to access
  • Safe and well-lit
  • Likely to get high levels of foot traffic

Front gardens, near schools, or along walking routes are ideal. The goal is to make your library inviting and easily accessible.

Step 2: Build or Buy Your Library

You have a few options when it comes to the physical structure:

  • DIY build: Use weather-resistant materials like cedar or exterior plywood. Include a slanted roof and a door that closes securely. You’ll need a couple of shelves and a door. You could start from scratch or transform an existing structure like an animal hutch or bird house.
  • Hire a builder - local carpenters or hobbyists can create custom designs, those this may be expensive.
  • Buy a kit or pre-made box - Amazon and Etsy, for example have many on offer.

Whichever option you choose, make sure it has shelves for several books and don’t forget to add a log book and pen. This helps you and borrowers keep track of the books and movements and lets people write down their thoughts about your library. They may write thank you notes, or even have requests.

Add personality with paint, signage, or decorations to help your library stand out.

Step 3: Stock It Thoughtfully

A great Little Library is always evolving. Start with a mix of:

  • Children’s books
  • Popular fiction
  • Non-fiction and local interest titles

Encourage variety and rotate books regularly. Ask friends, neighbours, or local charities for donations. Keeping the collection fresh ensures people return again and again.

Step 4:Register Your Library

To officially join the network, you can registery our library through Little Free Library by purchasing a charter sign. This gives your library a unique charter number and access to steward resources and benefits.

After registering, you’ll set up a steward account. This allows you to manage your library’s details and connect with the wider community of library stewards.

Step 5:Add Your Library to the Map

One of the most exciting features is the global map. Using the Little Free Library mobile app, you can:

  • Pin your library’s exact location
  • Add photos and a description
  • Make it discoverable to visitors

Once you update your listing and set its status to “mapped,” your library will appear instantly on the world map.

The app also lets users search by location, get directions, and even plan routes to visit multiple libraries nearby. This makes your library part of a global reading adventure.

Step 6:Build Community Around It

A Little Free Library thrives on participation. Spread the word by:

  • Hosting a small launch event
  • Sharing on social media
  • Inviting neighbours to contribute books

The more people feel involved, the more successful your library will be.

FinalThoughts

Starting a Little Free Library is about more than books - it’s about connection. With a bit of creativity and care, you can create a space that brings people together, sparks curiosity, and keeps stories circulating in your community.
